Volunteer Opportunities

At this time, we are not able to accept new applications for Zoo volunteers. The City of Santa Ana is currently re-organizing the policies and procedures for all City volunteers. We look forward to recruiting and welcoming new Volunteers soon. Please keep an eye on this page for updates.

Docents lead tours and teach education programs to 1st - 4th grade school groups on weekday mornings. After an extensive training program, this volunteer program requires volunteering one morning per week.
Minimum age: 18.

Our Family Farm monitors assist the public with feeding the goats and sheep while sharing information about the animals. They also monitor guests with milking our interactive "milking cow" and assisting the public in making butter. Monitors sign up for two hour shifts any day of the week.
Minimum age: 16.

Ambassadors interact with the public at various stations around the zoo by using touchable artifacts, photos, etc. They also assist staff during live animal presentations. Program requires volunteering one day per month. You must be able to work independently and have good public relations skills.
Minimum age: 18.

Every month, something new and interesting is happening at the Zoo! Whether it is the Zoo-B-Que, Zoofari or Boo at the Zoo, we're always in need of volunteers to assist with the events. Work on kids' crafts, scoop ice cream or paint faces.
Minimum age: 16.

Is office work your cup of tea? Do you enjoy working on computers? Then helping out filing, stuffing, folding, labeling, or entering data may be your perfect match. No experience required. It's fun, easy and interesting. Work mornings or afternoons, weekdays or weekends.
Minimum age: 16.

Volunteers are needed to assist the Zoo keepers with tasks such as cleaning animal exhibits, cutting diets, preparing enrichment items, cleaning around exhibits, and general exhibit maintenance. This is physically demanding work that involves dust, dirt, hay, animal dander, and various outdoor weather conditions.
Minimum age: 16 in the Crean Family Farm and 18 in the Main Zoo.
Animal Services volunteer program currently closed until further notification.

Would you like to donate your time in the office making a difference to help animals and visitors? Do you have a background in accounting and financial reporting? We could use your expertise!

Must have experience with not-for-profit accounting standards, including how to record transactions in the general ledger, including contributions and expenses with restrictions and/or conditions, and release of such restrictions and conditions; also knowledge of QuickBooks. We're looking for approximately 2-4 hours monthly to assist our bookkeeper with difficult transactions and month-end close, including reviewing reconciliations internally prepared financial statements.

Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (a 501c3 non-profit organization) has a need for volunteers seeking community service hours, and we encourage you to complete your requirements at the Zoo. We have an opportunity for you to help welcome our guests at the gate, check in parties, and greet Zoo Members with stickers for most Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm.
